Sue's Dutch Apple Pie Text Only
Ingredients:
- Deep dish pie shell
- 1 egg yolk
- Filling:
- About 5 or 6 cups sliced apples (drained well)
- pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon Corn Starch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice
- optional:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- Topping:
- 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup butter at room temperature
Preparation Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400F
Brush bottom and sides of pie shell evenly with egg yolk.
Bake on baking sheet until just light brown (about 5 minutes)
While preparing apple slices place a pinch of salt in water to prevent the apples from turning brown during preparation.
Mix filling ingredients well and set aside.
To bring out the flavor of the apples, I do not include the sugars in the filling. I believe that fruits are God's dessert and as such don't need to be sweetened.
In another bowl, mix together topping ingredients with fork or pastry blender until crumbly.
Bake on baking sheet until topping is golden and filling is bubbling, about 50 minutes.
